Super Bowl XLIX (49) was played between the Seattle Seahawks, making their second consecutive appearance in the Super Bowl, and the New England Patriots, who joined the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers as one of three teams to make eight appearances in the Super Bowl. For the second straight season, the number one seeds from both conferences met in the league championship game. Seattle became the first team to appear in consecutive Super Bowls since New England won two straight in 2004 and 2005 (XXXVIII and XXXIX). With most of the Patriots Super Bowls, th efirst half remained scoreless until, in the second quarter, Brady threw an 11 yard touchdown pass to receiver Brandon LaFell. With only 2:16 left in the second quarter, Marshawn Lynch scored a 3 yard touchdown run to tie the game. On New England's ensuing possession, Brady threw a 22 yard touchdown completion to Rob Gronkowski with 31 seconds remaining. with only six seconds remained until halftime, coach Pete Carroll decided to take a shot at the end zone. A gamble that paid off. Wilson threw an 11 yard touchdown pass to Matthews., tying the game at 14 with just two seconds left. Seattle took the second half kickoff, and scored right away with a 27 yard field goal giving Seattle their first lead of the game, 17 ot 14. On New England's next possession, Bobby Wagner intercepted Brady, and then scored with Wilson's 3 yard touchdown pass to Doug Baldwin. the was score 24 to 14, and would remain this way going into the fourth quarter. Up until now, no team in Super Bowl history had ever overcome a fourth-quarter deficit of more than seven points.With 12:10 left in the game, New England cut their deficit to 3 on Brady's 4 yard touchdown toss to Danny Amendola. After a Seattle 3-and-out, Brady gave his team a 28 to 24 lead with a 3 yard touchdown toss to Julian Edelman. With 26 seconds in the game, the Seahawks called a pass play in which Kearse would run a pick on the right side of the field to draw defensive backs away from Lockette as Lockette ran a slant to the middle. Brandon Browner blocked Kearse at the line of scrimmage, preventing him from reaching Butler. Lockette appeared to be uncovered at the 1 yard line when Wilson threw the ball,Butler read the play and make an interception. The turnover gave New England the ball on their own 1 yard line with 20 seconds remaining in regulation. New England then kneeled the ball and won the game. This game was voted, by the NFL and the fans, to be the best performances by both teams in Super Bowl history!
