Star Wars: The Phantom Menace is the first movie in the Star Wars story. It is a time of great peace in the galaxy and the Jedi Knights protect that peace in the Galactic Republic. The tranquil world of Naboo, however, is besieged by the villainous Trade Federation. Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn are dispatched to assist the peaceful planet. They soon discover that a larger power is in control of the mysterious attack, and that the sworn enemies of the Jedi Order, the Sith, may have returned after being thought extinct for a thousand years. The two Jedi rescue the captive queen of the Naboo, Padmé Amidala, and hide on the remote desert of Tatooine. There they find a boy named Anakin Skywalker. The Force is unusually strong with this boy, and Qui-Gon believes he could be the one that will bring balance to the Force. Anakin wins a local podrace and uses the reward to repair the queen's ship. After winning the race, Qui-Gon also managed to free Anakin from slavery. The Jedi return to Naboo after an encounter with the enigmatic Darth Maul and, with the help of the native Gungans and Skywalker's excellent starfighter piloting, the droid armies of the Trade Federation are shut down and Naboo is freed. The Jedi kill Darth Maul, but victory comes with a heavy price. Qui-Gon is killed in the fray, and the burden rests on Obi-Wan to train young Skywalker.
