The Two Towers starts with the breaking of the Fellowship. Boromir is slain by three orc arrows, Frodo and Sam leave the Company to travel to Mordor by themselves, and Merry and Pippin are taken by Uruk-Hai. Aragorn then sends Boromir in one of the boats down the Falls of Rauros. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli decide to go after Merry and Pippin. Merry and Pippin are inadvertently rescued by the Rohirrim and escape into Fangorn Forest. Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas come upon Èomer and his company, who then tell Aragorn that they slaughtered a band of Uruks and left none alive and give Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas a pair of horses. Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas go to see the pile of burning bodies, there Aragorn finds a set of foot prints that lead into Fangorn. They camp the night there and during the night they see a man who disappears soon after they spot him, during this incident their horses break loose and bolt. The next morning they travel into Fangorn and encounter Gandalf, who they originally believed to be Saruman, who then tells them how he was brought back as Gandalf the White after his battle with the Balrog. Gandalf assures them that Merry and Pippin are safe and that they must go to Edoras to confront the King. After they leave Fangorn Gandalf gives them back their horses and takes Shadowfax to Edoras where they rescue King Theoden from Saruman via Wormtongue. Theoden then takes all of his people and rides to Helm’s Deep with Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas to protect his people from the coming onslaught of Saruman. They then battle Saruman’s forces but endure heavy losses when Gandalf shows up with the rest of the Rohirrim and rout his forces into a waiting group of Hurons. Gandalf, Theoden, Èomer, Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas travel to Isengard to confront Saruman. When they arrive they find that Isengard has been flooded by the Ents and they also find Merry and Pippin who tell them how Isengard was taken. All of them then travel to the base of Orthanc and Gandalf offers Saruman a chance to repent. Saruman refuses and is the cast out of the White Council and the Order of Wizards. Meanwhile Gríma Wormtongue throws a plantír out of a window and it lands at Pippins feet. Gandalf gets it from Pippin and they depart from Isengard and camp on the road to Edoras. During the middle of the night Pippin looks into the plantír and communicates with Sauron and delivers a message to Gandalf, who Sauron thinks is Saruman, giving away Sauron’s next target:Minas Tirith. Gandalf and Pippin go to Minas Tirith, while the rest stay and prepare for war. Meanwhile Frodo and Sam navigated Emyn Muil with the help of a captured Gollum who has been stalking them since Moria. After they leave Emyn Muil they make there way across the Dead Marshes with Gollum guiding them once more. When they approach the Black Gate, Gollum then convinces them that there is another way into Mordor. They then travel south into Ithilien and meet up with Faramir who takes them into Henneth Annûn and almost kills Gollum for fishing in a sacred pool but Gollum is saved by Frodo. After Frodo, Sam, and Gollum depart for Cirith Ungol Faramir gives the hobbits a warning about the stair there. Frodo, Sam, and Gollum climb the stair and enter Shelob’s Lair where Frodo is stung and is taken to Cirith Ungol, which ends Book Two.
