The Fellowship of the Ring is the first book in Lord of the Rings. It starts off with the preparations for Bilbo Baggins’ 110 birthday party. At the end of the Party Bilbo reveals that he is going to leave and promptly vanishes with help from the Ring. Many years pass before Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin finally go to Rivendell with the Ring. When they leave the Shire they go through one of the oldest forests in Middle Earth and meat Tom Bombadil and his wife. After they leave Tom’s House the go into the Barrow-Downs, home of the Barrow-Wights who are guardians of Agmar's tombs. After they are captured by a Barrow-Wight and almost sacrificed they call to Tom Bombadil for help, he then rescues them and sends them on there way. When they stop in Bree to wait for Gandalf they discover that he isn’t there and there is a man named Aragorn that Gandalf wants them to trust. They spend the night with Aragorn at the Inn of the Prancing Pony and escape an attack on their lives by the Nâzgul. They leave the next morning and head off to Rivendell. On their way they camp at Weathertop and Frodo gets stabbed by a Morgul Blade by the Witch King. They then try and get to Rivendell as quickly as possible while being hunted by the Nâzgul. They meet up with Arawen a couple leagues from Rivendell and she then takes Frodo on her horse and transports him to Rivendell while saving him from the Wraiths. After Frodo recovers his strength Elrond holds a meeting to discuss what to do with the Ring. Elrond comes to the conclusion that the Ring must be taken to Mordor to be destroyed. The Fellowship of the Ring is then formed consisting of Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, Merry, Pippin, Sam and Frodo. While on the Quest they are forced to travel into Moria where Gandalf duels a Balrog and falls into the Abyss of Khazad-dûm. After the rest of the company flees Moria they take shelter in Lothlorien the home to Galadriel. Before they leave Moria Galadriel gives them Elvish gifts that will help in the quest ahead. They then travel downriver on boats Galadriel provided. After they approach the Falls of Rauros they take to the land and confront a massive squad of Uruk-Hai. This ends Book One.
